Superheroes, animals, everyday objects, emojis and classic characters barely scrape the surface of Halloween costume ideas.
No matter the age, Halloween enthusiasts can scour local stores as early as late August and year-round online for ready-to-wear costumes. However, making affordable, adorable, one-of-a-kind creations is an increasingly popular trend, especially for parents.
A handful of HER readers shared their own children’s DIY Halloween costumes. Learn how one baby was transformed into “baby grandma,” and get ideas with other readers’ amazing designs.

Rachel Allen’s daughter, Addalyn, was 7 months old when she decided to make her into an old lady for her first Halloween in 2016. Instead of buying a pre-made outfit, she decided to assemble some store-bought clothing with DIY accessories to complete the costume.
Addalyn’s baby grandma costume’s main components include a Carter’s dress, a Once Upon a Time sweater and juDanzy tall knee high socks Rachel ordered from Amazon.
Rachel then took baby sunglasses with the lenses popped out and attached a string of beads.
“The “hair” was a baby hat with cotton balls hot glued to the outside of it. “I sprayed a little grey hair spray on the cotton balls to give it a grey haired look,” Rachel explained. A simple assembly of items in this DIY project makes for a comfortable, humorous and adorable baby costume.
